Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the new Nalanda University campus today.
“Visiting the excavated remains of Nalanda was exemplary. It was an opportunity to be at one of the greatest seats of learning in the ancient world. This site offers a profound glimpse into the scholarly past that once thrived here. Nalanda has created an intellectual spirit that continues to thrive in our nation.”
PM Modi said that the renaissance of Nalanda near its ancient ruins, this new campus will showcase the potential of India to the world. Nalanda will tell – Nations which stand on strong human values, know how to lay the foundation of a better future by reviving the history. And friends – Nalanda is not only the renaissance of India's past.
The Historical Nalanda:
- Flourished in Bihar, India, during the fifth to the thirteenth century AD.
- Regarded as one of the most important educational hubs in antiquity.
- Brought in academics and students from all across Asia, promoting a thriving discourse.
- Renowned for its Buddhist teaching, but it also provided instruction in a wide range of other areas, including logic, philosophy, astronomy, and medicine.
- Kept a vast collection with millions of texts that were sadly lost to invaders.
The Indian government started an ambitious endeavor in 2010 to bring this historic center of learning back to life. A new international university was founded under the Nalanda University Act with the goal of reviving the inclusiveness and intellectual collaboration that defined its historical forerunner.
One of the earliest residential institutions in the world was the original Nalanda University. In 2016, the Nalanda remains were designated as a United Nations Heritage Site.
The goal of the current Nalanda University is to serve as a worldwide center of knowledge, encouraging cooperation between academics from all fields and nations. It has linkages to some of the world's most prestigious institutions and is recognized as a "Institution of National Importance" in India.
