Why the UGC NET exam in June 2024 is being conducted in OMR format (Optical Mark Recognition)?

UGC NET EXAM

UGC NET  June 2024 Exam

The UGC NET test, which leads to lectureships and research jobs in Indian universities, has lately experienced format changes. After years of being administered as a computer-based test (CBT), the forthcoming June 2024 cycle will return to the conventional OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) exam format. This shift has caused debate among students and educators, raising the question: Why the UGC NET exam in June 2024 is being conducted in OMR format?

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has tasked the NTA with administering the UGC-NET test, which determines Indian nationals' eligibility for Junior Research Fellowships, Assistant Professor positions, and Ph.D. admissions in Indian universities and colleges. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will administer the UGC - NET exam in June 2024 for 83 topics using OMR (pen and paper) format.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has received requests from candidates to postpone the UGC - NET June 2024 examination date due to the UPSC CSE (Prelims) Examination - 2024 on the same date, June 16, 2024. Now the exam will be on June 18,2024.

There are several reasons why the UGC NET exam in June 2024 is being conducted in OMR format (Optical Mark Recognition) instead of the previously used Computer Based Testing (CBT) format:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: OMR exams are significantly cheaper to administer compared to CBT. The cost of printing OMR sheets and scanners is much lower than the investment needed for CBT infrastructure, software licenses, and maintenance. This can be a major factor for the UGC, especially considering the large scale of the NET exam.
  • Accessibility: OMR exams don't require an internet connection, unlike CBT. This ensures wider accessibility for students across India, even in areas with limited or unreliable internet connectivity. This can be crucial for inclusivity and ensuring a level playing field for all test-takers
  • .Familiarity: Many students are familiar with the OMR format from previous exams or school assessments. This can be advantageous as it reduces anxiety or confusion about the testing process itself. Students may feel more comfortable and focused on the exam content since they don't need to learn a new testing interface.
  • Potential Technical Glitches: While uncommon, technical glitches can disrupt CBT exams. This can be stressful for students and lead to logistical challenges. OMR eliminates this risk, ensuring a smoother exam experience.

It's important to note that the decision to switch to OMR might be temporary. The UGC may be considering various factors and student feedback before deciding on a long-term format for the NET exam. Here are some possibilities:

  • Continuing with OMR: If cost-effectiveness, accessibility, and familiarity remain priorities, the UGC might decide to continue with the OMR format for future exams.
  • Returning to CBT: If the UGC prioritizes features like faster grading, wider question formats, and potential security benefits, they might consider returning to CBT after addressing concerns about accessibility and cost.
  • Hybrid Approach: The UGC might explore a hybrid approach, using OMR for some sections and CBT for others, depending on the suitability of the question format.

The recent change to OMR for the UGC NET exam has aroused discussion. While CBT has advantages such as efficiency and a variety of question formats, OMR's simplicity, cost, and offline capability are all crucial factors.
Ultimately, the goal of the UGC is to conduct a fair, secure, and accessible exam for all NET aspirants. The chosen format should optimize these factors while ensuring a smooth testing experience for students.
